Nuit Noire - Olivier Smolders - Louis-Philippe Capelle

Nuit Noire is a film which sailed completely under most people's radars when it first came out. Thankfully I am hearing it mentioned more and more as years go on.

Surreal imagery and shadowy compositions are the crux of the visuals. The closest comparison I can think of is David Lynch's Eraserhead (which will certainly be featured at some point). There is also some remarkable macro-photography of insects and and very bright, saturated colours contrasted with muted brown tones.

Top 3:

So much to love here. The dirty, muted colour palette complements the giant cocoon perfectly. Light plays around the room from various sources, granting the frame a wonderful chiaroscuro look. The image itself is very surreal and memorable.
More chiaroscuro lighting and weird imagery. Symmetry can often appear forced, but it adds to the unnerving feel of this shot.
I find macro-photography interesting in general. This really brings out the highly saturated colours on the insect and captures its fascinating features.

The rest:

Creepy imagery.

Gorgeous lighting.

Reminds me of the tunnel scene from Tarkovsky's Stalker

Great contrast of colours.

Fascinating nightmarish shot.

Mmm... odd perspective on stairs.

The overexposure creates a massive contrast between this and the other shots.
