Mother and Son is probably the most achingly beautiful film I've seen. Glacial pacing helps magnify the visuals and the subtle, touching central relationship. Expect lens filters, painterly landscapes and symbolism.
Top 3:
| One of my all-time favourite shots. The trees look like they have been painted on to the scene. Man's existence amongst the beauty and scale of nature is demonstrated in the visuals as well as the content. |
| This shot is especially lyrical in the film, the train slowly crawling across the screen as the man watches on. Is he thinking of escape, reflecting on man's encroachment on nature (a strong theme) or appreciating the beauty of the scene? |
| Shooting during the golden hour is cinematography's version of cheating. Regardless, the sunlight playing over the branches and casting light into the characters' world is beautiful. |
The rest:
| The soft lens filters interact with the flowers to cast a lovely pink tint across the centre of the frame. |
| Another shot which could be a painting. |
| Man lost in the landscape. |
| Love the perspective of this shot. It looks like he is standing on a near-vertical slope, poised to send him to his death. |
